Esmie Tseng sentenced

The Overland Park teen-ager who pleaded guilty to killing her mother was sentenced today to eight years and four months in prison.

Esmie Tseng, 17, declined to say anything during the brief hearing in Johnson County District Court. She had pleaded guilty in March to voluntary manslaughter.

The sentence imposed by Judge Brenda Cameron was recommended by both sides last month as part of a plea agreement.

Esmie's mother, 55-year-old Shu Yi Zhang, died after being stabbed to death on Aug. 19.

I first read about emilie tseng in an English paper..www.guardian.co.uk, worth a visit. Its emblematic of what Europeans find incomprehensible about American justice..its ability to find ways to 'really make them pay' and so doing, subvert itself. Its simple, a crime comitted by a juvenile is subject to juvenile justice..an adult likewise subject to adult justice. So how can anyone in that situation be tried in an adult court and receive an adult sentence? Its the vindictiveness of it all, directed at what is a human tragedy needing a lot of understanding. Bulls and china shops come to mind.
Not to say that these things dont happen here and that therearen't peope baying for blood and retribution...thats why there are laws. These lawyers, DA's, prosecutors you guys have are wanabee politicians playing to the crowd and for high stakes...they don't give a flying....about emilie..good for those football moms (I won't say soccer because it's real name is football!) Bob

Are you retarded? The bitch stabbed her own mother repeatedly, with two different knives. Bitch deserves to rot. I don't care if she was abused - I feel for her on that count, but it doesn't excuse murder.

Um. all I can say is you all need counseling. Parents
are here to show you right from wrong, and your
complaint is normal teenage angst...but all the other
teenagers who have to deal with the exact same issues,
DO NOT VIOLATE their parents or KILL them. You whiney

you did. You had many options, like going to a
shelter, telling a school counselor of your thoughts,

Sorry, that response is basically to her xanga page I just read through were everyone on there was supporting her and saying her homelife was so awful and she was so smart. NO SHE WASNT...she killed her mom! ugh.

okay esmie was the sweetest person i have ever met. and her mom really abused her .. that doesn't give her the right to kill her mom, but seriously people you didn't even know her so you shouldn't be saying shit about her life. plus she was the smartest person in her grade and had straight A's she just did a really stupid thing without thinking about it.

Isn't funny how some people point their finger at esmie's mum and say that esmie's mum 'abused' her while forgeting the simple fact that Esmie herself ... umm... er....oh right...just KILLED HER MOM!

This is absolutely disgusting and I'm writing from the POV of a sixteen year girl with an Asian heritage too.

I can understand to Esmie feeling pressured, eg. once I got a 99% for the first time in a maths test and Dad said that he was 'disappointed' in me. Of course, I didn't throw a psycho and then start stabbing my dad but I agreed with him that I could have done better, which is true.

See, the difference between me and Esmie lies in the fact that I recognised, underneath all the initial criticism, that my parents love me and want the best for me. Which is something all good parents should have for their kids.

And Esmie's mum was a good parent. Esmie might not have understood it back then, but by putting the pressure for her to do well at school, could lead to a better income job and success in the future. Now tell me, what rational-minded person would say no to money and success? Her criticism is actual the subtle and most powerful form of encouragement to get her daughter to improve. And it underlies the love her mum had for her. Eg. once I topped 7 out of 8 subjects in my whole year as well as crowned Dux for the 4th consecutive year running, and Dad just said he wanted me to top all of my subjects next year and I should try better. But underneath, I knew he very proud of me and loved me heaps, but didn't want my ego getting to my head so he didn't outright congratulate me.lol.

Do you really think that parents like to see their children suffer, like what some people make out Esmie's mum to be?

Esmie is the only one to blame, not drugs or her home life. Her home life was decent, not abusive, and I would challenge anybody to adequately prove it otherwise. Plus drugs were HER choice in the first place, it was her decision to take them ... newsflash: drugs don't do the actual killing - guess what (gasp!) people do it!

And if I hear anyone calling Esmie "smart", I am going to laugh at the irony. Chances are, why Esmie was so 'smart' in the first place was because of her parents' pressuring her to get good grades. Believe me, being that smart, as her friends would claim, did not come naturally and her parents must have played a big part in improving her grades. Plus any naturally smart person would have the decency not to kill their own parents.

Killing one's parents is an abnormality of nature. Your own parents gave life to do so you don't go around and fucking kill them whenever they piss you off! It's like killing yourself ... only worse.

Esmie needs help, that is true, but it is time to own up to the consequences of her actions.

Different people have different levels of ability to cope with their problems and conflicts. I definitely don't condone what Esmie did to her mother, but I think that things could be much better for her, if she was supported by someone who could empathize and help her through her problems before that fateful day. Of course it was her fault to take the mind altering drugs (which were not found in the tests they ran on her) that her peers said she took on the day of the deed, and it was her fault that she did what she did, but I'm pretty sure that she would learn her lesson from that. I personally believe that she IS a very smart girl, who was just pushed too far, and forced to crack under pressure. It doesn't matter if she was "made" smart by her parents, if some people prefer to look at it that way; even the smartest people can be pushed over the edge.

I hope for the best for Esmie.

Forgetting to turn off the tap is a "stupid thing", calling your significant other fat is a "stupid thing", stabbing your mother is not only a stupid thing it is a horrific act of violence that is not only "stupid", but completely unwarranted and illegal (seriously it IS illegal to kill people in the US even though there may be some irony to that). So she was a good person when you knew her, does THAT honestly make it any more okay for her to kill her mom? No. It doesn't matter if she was Einstein, she killed her mother and this is her price. People are going to judge so you better get used to it. As much as anyone can say, "Oh well I knew her therefore I don't think people shouldn't shit talk!" My friends tell me Jeffree Star is the nicest person ever, that didn't stop him from socking a girl in the face without reason leading him to being permabanned from Toronto and never able to sing here at Pride Fest again. Keep your personal life with Esmie to yourself, that was in the past. It may have been a good past but it's not what she's getting evaluated on. The judges aren't letting her off based on her personality, it's based on her crime. My gawd there is a difference.

However, this being said, she is still young and it'd be horrible to let her rot in jail. She doesn't deserve life but she DOES deserve life time counseling. However the fact that she's getting only 8 years for a killing her mother is a joke. Kelly Ellard beat up a girl in her home town with a bunch of her friends and she's getting LIFE. And the girl she "killed" drowned because they pushed her into a river and she couldn't recover from her wounds to swim out. Esmie does probably however have better lawyers.
